Rustic charm in every corner

By Katelynn Henry

For the last 35 years, Ma’s General Store has paid tribute to the general stores that once served as gathering places for past generations; nostalgia lingers in every corner and display. “I have always had a love for old general stores,” says Kathy Briner, owner of Ma’s General Store. “This isn’t a job, it’s a passion.”

In 2023, Ma’s General Store found its new home on Queen Street in Littlestown after a fire destroyed its original location in 2022. “I lost everything and thought about retiring,” says Kathy. “But I love what I do, and I wanted to keep doing it.” Despite everything, the general store has continued to flourish. Being only a few minutes from the previous location has allowed the store to remain within the beloved Littlestown community.

Every visit to Ma’s General Store is a new adventure. Kathy spends time antiquing and visiting estate sales to hand-select unique products for the store. From seasonal decorations to rustic furniture to collectibles of the past, the general store is full of one-of-a-kind items waiting to be rediscovered. The layout of the general store also contributes to its uniqueness; every item is thoughtfully displayed rather than sitting on a shelf. “I want people to be able to envision how things can go in their home,” says Kathy. In one corner, a living room display creates inspiration for styling decorations. Living up to its name, the general store also has candy, candles, handmade soap and more.

What truly sets Ma’s General Store apart from others is its dedication to connection. From the home-like atmosphere to the friendly interactions, the general store is a welcoming place for everyone. “I never consider my customers as customers,” says Kathy. “I consider them as friends.” Over the years, she has formed deep bonds with people in the community. Her goal is to continue creating relationships for many years to come while sharing her passion for general stores, rustic charm and one-of-a-kind finds.
