Living History and Programs at the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital

Visitors to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center have an opportunity to experience the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital throughout the 2019 summer season. Walk the grounds, hear the stories and feel the emotions of life – and death – at this historic farm suddenly transformed into a corps field hospital. Civil War era encampments are on site. Living historians from across the U.S. camp at the farm and provide visitors a glimpse of what happened there in 1863.

 

The historic site is open for visitors Friday through Sunday, June 7 through Aug 11, and is only accessible via shuttle from the Museum & Visitor Center. Daily programs are offered. Special programs are offered some weekends at 12:30 p.m. in the lower level of the restored historic barn.

Living History Encampments:

 

Patriot Daughters of Lancaster:  Ladies aid society from Lancaster, formed after the firing on Fort Sumter, to provide money, food, clothing, bandages and supplies for soldiers serving in local companies of Pennsylvania regiments. The ladies cared for the wounded at Christ Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Seminary in Gettysburg, and held sanitary fairs and bazaars to raise money.

                                                           

Chaplain Scott Sturdivant:  Confederate Chaplain displays chaplain’s tent and period gospel tracts, and discusses the role of Army chaplains during the war and the Great Awakening of the Southern Army.

 

Visitors have the opportunity to shuttle to the historic site free (upon request) with the purchase of a Film, Cyclorama & Museum Experience ticket at the Museum & Visitor Center or purchase a single ticket to the site. For tickets, visit GettysburgFoundation.org or call 877-874-2478.
