George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital Hosts Living History Encampments & Programs

Visitors to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center have an opportunity to experience the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital throughout the 2019 summer season. Walk the grounds, hear the stories and feel the emotions of life–and death–at this historic farm suddenly transformed into a corps field hospital. Civil War era encampments are on site. Living historians from across the U.S. camp at the farm and provide visitors a glimpse of what happened there in 1863.

 

The historic site is open for visitors Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (and on the Battle Anniversary July 1-3), through Aug 11, and is only accessible via shuttle from the Museum & Visitor Center. Daily programs are offered. Special programs are offered some Saturdays & July 2 at 12:30 p.m. in the lower level of the restored historic barn.

11:30 a.m. & 2 p.m. –              An Army Field Hospital: The George Spangler Farm

The Granite School House, the 2nd Hospital on Spangler’s’ Land:  The story of one of the sites for medical care during the Battle of Gettysburg, located in the fields and woods around the little school.

The Role of Civilian Organizations:  The Christian Commission and the U.S. Sanitary Commission.

An Account of Dr. Bleecker Hovey & Wife and Nurse Marilla Hovey:  Featuring the surgical kit used at the Spangler Farm in 1863–still intact after 156 years.

 

Living History Encampments

 

July 1-3

17th Corps Field Hospital: Exhibits and demonstrations of Union Civil War medicine includes pill making, nursing, nutrition, medicines, medical instruments including a pocket and capital amputation kit, and daily sick call illnesses.

 

2nd Corps Field Hospital CSA: Confederate field hospital with portrayal of Confederate surgeon, Hunter McGuire.

 

July 5-7

Maxwell’s Battery – Battery K 1st US Artillery: Historians teach the purpose of a Civil War field hospital, the devastating wounds and treatments, and the support services provided to medical personnel and wounded and sick soldiers.

 

Of The People Living History Association: Non-profit historians group dedicated to depicting civilian life in support of the war effort during the era with an emphasis on the U.S. Sanitary Commission.

 

July 12-14

Society of Civil War Surgeons:  Historians portray Civil War era surgeons and demonstrate various surgical procedures and medicines.

 

July 19-21

Chaplain Scott Sturdivant:  Confederate Chaplain displays chaplain’s tent and period gospel tracts, and discusses the role of Army chaplains during the war and the Great Awakening of the Southern Army.

 

July 26-28

Doc Willen & Company: Union surgeon, civilian nurse and hospital steward discuss Civil War medicine and portray medical personnel with expert explanations of medical care.

 

Citizens of Gettysburg: Civilians, attired in authentic Victorian period clothing, recreate the experience of Civil War era civilians and provide “first person impressions.”

 

Aug. 2-4

150th PA Volunteer Infantry “Bucktails” Co. C & K Civil War Field Hospital: Historians portray two of four companies recruited from Crawford County, Pennsylvania and the personnel who served in the Hospital Department.

 

Aug. 9-11

Company A 9th PA Reserves 38th PA Pittsburg Rifles: Medical unit from near Pittsburgh and historians portray members of the U.S. Sanitary Commission.

 

136th NYSV Medical Hospital: Regimental field hospital based in Charlotte, North Carolina demonstrates surgeries, nursing techniques and duties, including the use of mannequins and period instruments.
