Curated by Samantha Frisoli ‘18, Daniella Snyder ‘18, Gabriella Bucci ‘19, Melissa Casale ‘19, Keira Koch ‘19, and Paige Deschapelles ’20 under the direction of Professor Yan Sun, Ph.D.
Students in Prof. Yan Sun’s art history methods course examine the subject of animals and plants in East Asian paintings, sculpture, textiles, prints, and decorative objects from the Gettysburg College Collection and from private collections. Specific works include a Ming Dynasty jade vase, exquisite Chinese embroideries on silk, and a centuries-old Japanese woodblock print, among many others. A full-color catalogue accompanying the exhibition, with essays by the student curators, provides the historical context and the iconographic meanings of each floral and faunal motif.
