22(9) Vintage Wares

By Sarah Smith

If you’re looking for a local vintage clothing store, look no further. 22(9) Vintage Wares has you covered.

The shop, which offers clothing for both men and women, boasts a wide variety of items that span the 1940s to the 1990s, including dresses, skirts, tops, shoes, accessories, earrings, coats, and blazers.

The shop, located at 49 Chambersburg St., opened in May 2015 in a building that is also vintage. “We absolutely love being in a historic building; there are so many great features that complement our vintage collection,” says shop owner Lynn Chronister. “Our curved glass windows, filled with eye-catching seasonal displays, pull you in from the sidewalk. As you walk through the front door, the tall ceilings give the shop a spacious and inviting atmosphere. The spanning woodwork shelves give the space an old-time shop feel.” There’s even a 99-year-old cash register, Chronister says.

Chronister decided to sell vintage after spending a decade in the culinary arts. She’d always had a passion for vintage items, but it wasn’t always geographically feasible. “I was tired of having to travel out of town to shop for vintage, so I decided to bring unique and quality vintage to Gettysburg,” she says.

What is a must-have wedding item from your shop?

“The shop has a bridal gown collection with dresses from the 1940s to the late 1970s. There are some truly unique and beautiful dresses in that collection. If a dress isn’t the ‘something old’ the bride is searching for, we also have a jewelry bar filled with all sorts of vintage rhinestone and pearl baubles. Rhinestone brooches have been a popular bridal item lately, with the bride opting to add an accent to the bouquet or to adorn their hair.”

The name 22(9) was chosen from an impactful year in Chronister’s life. “ I spent a year living with friends in a rented house with the street address of 229,” Chronister says. “It was an incredible year of bonding and sharing everything, from clothes and jewelry to life’s struggles and triumphs. When the time came for me to choose a name for the shop, my mind kept going back to that year and the spirit of sisterhood.”

Now, Chronister is following her passion. “Watching someone fall in love with these pieces and seeing them go out the door onto a new lifetime of adventure is incredibly rewarding,” she says, “and keeps me doing what I love.”
